The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t have a great roster. I wouldn’t even say they have a good roster… It’s not like I didn’t see Trevor Lawrence.
But they have a roster that can (and should) be satisfied with AFC South until this time next year.
That has not been the case in the last ten years. Of course they have skilled players. They performed at wide receiver and ran back for the break. They executed a brief two-year intergenerational defense. But it depends on how the team grows at its first quarterback this year, and for a long time it could be a very good team.
That means City Meyer is cutting players who would have held on for the smaller season.
The trial begins this year, even though victory is yet to come.
Given the future, who are some of the players who could be sacked this season?
Dorsett entered the league with a stunning 4.33 seconds 40 in the NFL and went on to win the Miami pro season with a 4.25 era. If there’s one thing Meyer likes about his technical players, it’s speed.
But there are four receivers that are locked, making this roster: D. j. Chuck, Lavis Casciano, Marvin Jones and Colin Johnson. That leaves Dorsett with one or two spots left on the 53-man roster, and if Josh Imatobech can impress Otta and at training camp, many of them will have to look outside.
J. Henderson and Shaquille Griffin are on the outside line and Tyson Campbell is on the inside line, allowing Sidney Jones to overtake the team’s CB4 at best. I think during training camp Urban will choose to go beyond Trey. Herndon. Will the team choose to keep Jones on the bench, or a youngster who signed in 2022?
Tebbs got the job because of a personal relationship with the man who was eventually fired. But I don’t think he made the final list. There are four tight ends – Chris Manhaz, Luke Farrell, James O’Shaughnessy, and Taylor Davies – who are better than him now. Tebow is a super competitive athlete, but Florida’s long summer workout doesn’t bode well for someone trying to make a critical transition after a long absence from the NFL.
